Light falling on strange
stonecutting works,
wild smell of wet leaves
and silverveined wind;
his Soul was grimy with miseries,
echoes folded around him
like a mantle.
Recalling the nobility of
youth, he wore a brimless
half-smile,
kind pity caught in his teeth.

Minutes from conscious
thoughts, an ivy wall of
cheerless definitions struggled
upwards sluggishly.
He heard a clock somewhere,
spitting, in search of the
essence of prose, failed by physics
and English catacombs.
It must be eleven
he thought,
Time wasn't antisocial,
just wrapped up in itself.
"Find within you anything but yourself. Find and keep it beyond anything else."
