I've searched for the arbitrary,
Found places abandoned to a plague,
Under restoration yet unrestored:
Awl-marks tagged for eternity,
Fresh rage scored the plaster,
Hastily-painted mural of Christ
Marred upon the stone façade,
The scaffolding’s chain of pipes
And planks were
Dark with soot, vacated.

Some things in us that we can't see
Are narrow, dead ends from pillar
To post, soundlessly guiding where
We shouldn't be led.
He who grabs and demands an open hand
From which to stand again
May stand, higher even,
On other men.
Dust particles poised to curse us,
We cannot cure the condition of "versus".

Children play kick-the-can
With a dented censer;
I watch them battle with each kick, a
Fresh perfume of cinders.
I wrote this for theWrittenRevolution's June Prompt - Fear of the Planet. htblack.deviantart.com/journal…

It's about the thing I believe should be the most feared which is mankind itself, perpetually winding everything into mayhem and destruction. Spontaneous Combustion

Here the narrator goes on an arbitrary search for something to fear, finds a burned down and vandalized church which symbolizes mankind abandoning the idea of a God that can save them from themselves. OH MY GOD
I don't intend for there to be any religious undertones, it very well may be an orphanage and the symbolism can work just as well. In fact the orphanage idea is probably better since I have kids running around at the end. Anywho, so in the second stanza I turn inward and the rhymes at the end are remnants from when the poem was in a fixed form but I changed that idea around so it's free form now I guess.

This is set in the past ideally (it could also be distant future after some WWIII kinda stuff like By The Waters Of Babylon) I kind of wanted to inject some more old timey words but "awl" and "censer" are there so that should be good enough. I'm not all that smart.:stupidme: remake
